Ima Slooth-Jack Cole-1939

The great Jack Cole was quite prolific in the Golden Age in spite of having to concentrate on his monthly PLASTIC MAN stories and, early on, ghosting THE SPIRIT strip for Will Eisner. Here he is with an early MLJ strip that later resurfaced at another company.

At Cole's Comics, Paul Tumey draws attention to how often Cole had characters alter their facial appearances. Famously, Plastic Man did this, but others of Cole's characters did as well, such as in 2:2 above. When Tumey reproduced what amounted to an adaptation by Cole of a story of the Avenger, and it was recognized as such, the pieces fell into place.
