Pokey Oakey-Don Dean-1943

With the growing success of Al Capp's LI'L ABNER in the 1930's and '40's, hillbilly humor was suddenly chic. It prospered on radio, in vaudeville, in books and in comics. One of the most popular examples of the latter was Don Dean's POKEY OAKEY for MLJ with some nice Capp-style art. Here's an atypical example with a fantasy bent from a 1943 issue of TOP-NOTCH LAUGH COMICS (which also headlined the Black Hood). Look for Jesse James robbing people blind by selling a comic book for FIVE DOLLARS!! This particular issue, of course, now goes for dozens of times that amount!
